Fix the zoom
(update 4/3/2016) So it’s been over a year since I wrote this review and unsurprisingly Aspyr has taken absolutely no steps to fix anything. I wrote them an email last year and here was their response - "The zoom is the default setting for the PC version from which the Mac version was ported. Unfortunately, theres no update to change that at the moment.”
Honestly at this point I can only conclude that Aspyr is a sleazy company with with no integrity whatsoever - I can say with absolute certainty that I will never purchase another game from Aspyr again. It’s pretty clear what the Aspyr strategy is…they hammer out one Mac port of a popular game after another, and each one is a buggy mess. The catch is that they have no intention of fixing these bugs. They are counting on Mac gamers impulse-buying their favorite PC games the second they see that they are available in the App Store. They rack up a huge amount of sales on these buggy games and then move on to the next buggy, sloppy port without fixing any of the major issues. Other Aspyr games I’ve experienced this with are Roller-Coaster Tycoon 3 (major graphical glitches that have not been fixed), Supreme Commander 2 (completely broken multiplayer that was never fixed, so they just decided to remove it from the App Store instead of putting more effort into it), and then of course there’s C&C Generals - countless negative reviews mentioning the unplayable zoom level, and Aspyr apparently could not care less…they made their money off of our initial purchases so they are on to the next buggy port. Every Aspyr release is esentially the equivalent of a Steam early access game that never leaves alpha. I stongly encourage anybody reading this to show Aspyr that Mac gamers are not clueless idiots who will unquestioningly throw money at their sloppy ports - don’t give Aspyr another cent until they fix the zoom on this game. If Aspyr is willing to realease this game in an essentially unplayable state and abandon it, then it goes without saying that they will continue to do that with future ports.
--------(original review from March 2015 below)--------
i love this game - it’s just as much fun now as it was 12 years ago and the graphics still hold up today. There’s something about C&C Generals - I’ve played Starcraft 2, Supreme Commander, Planetary Annihilation, Company of Heroes, and just about every other modern strategy game, but none of them hooked me in the same way that Generals did.
That being said, I’m obviously happy to see it in the App Store and I wish I could give it a perfect review, but there is one huge issue - the camera is zoomed way, WAY too far in. I am playing on my 27 inch iMac and I was excited to experience this classic game on my 2560 x 1440 display. Here I am thinking I would have a larger view of the battlefield than ever before..imagine my disappointment when I realize the zoom is capped ridiculously close to the ground. You can’t even view your own base without having to scroll all over the place trying to find the right building. It makes it so that assigning buidings to hotkeys is the only efficient way of building an army.
To summarize - maximum zoom needs to be doubled at LEAST. Once that happens I will be happy to add the three missing stars
PS - I saw another reviewer mentioned that the dock appears when the mouse is scrolled to the bottom of the screen. I can confirm that I am experiencing the same issue - hopefully this is fixed soon as well (unless there is some setting I am unaware of that is causing this to happen)
